Unit 30 - task 6

Copyright - This is when a piece of data, anything from music, poetry, stories or videos are ‘claimed’ by the owner of the piece. This claiming is copyrighting, and this means that the person who owns it, makes it so that anyone who would like to use, edit or copy the piece would have to pay for it. This prevents things such as images from being copied and used when the owner would not want them to be, preventing plagiarism. Within the video game industry purchasing copyrighted data is common for other companies to pick up failing ideas and turning them into successes i.e. Red Dead Redemption.

Copyright Free - This is work that is not copyrighted and is free to be used by anyone who wishes to. The three ways for a piece not to be copyrighted is: There was no copyright claim originally attached, the attached copyright has since expired and the copyright has been surrendered by the owner.

Intellectual property -  This is a law that allows people to 'protect' ideas that they have, these ideas could be things such as an invention, logo idea or lyrics etc. The property term comes from the fact that they can be sold, leased or transferred etc. 

Trademark - This is the act of claiming products or services. The owner can pursue legal action against brand piracy (counterfeit usage of trademark) or trademark infringement. However, if the product/services falsely advertise or are offensive then the owner can be on the end of a legal investigation. The owner can also license the trademark and an example of this would be the FIFA video game as EA Sports have the license to use the real names of professional players. There are three types of trademark, The trademark symbol, Service Mark and Registered Trademark. A trademark holds less protection than a registered trademark.

Unit 30 - Task 8

File Format
File format is the types of files that you can save your files as. The content of the files dictates the file type as does the size and quality. The better the quality the bigger the file size will be. Types that are commonly used are ppt.file for powerpoints, wmv. for low quality windows media files and jpeg files for images.

Compression techniques
Data compression involves reducing the bit-rate from the original levels. To do this you encode information and by reducing the bit-rate the file will become smaller. There are two types of this, Lossless and Lossy. The lossless reduction is when you identify the wasted space used unnecessarily to transfer certain data. This will never result in lost information unlike the lossy which has a risk of losing information. The second way identifies unnecessary information and removes it.

Image resolution
The image resolution can be a big factor in file size and format. The better resolution the bigger the file however it would be sharper, clearer and more defined. Having a bigger file can be a hindrance if you are trying to upload a file to websites or send via email etc. This can be too big for the website or allocated file size within emails. So a better image resolution would be a bigger file size and so sometimes you have to compromise.

Colour depth
This relates to the amount of colour levels that make up a file. The greater the colour depth, the more pixels used to make up the file. A better colour depth makes the file quality better, however, like image resolution this also increases the file size. So it can make the file include a wider range of colours but the size does increase.

Task 3 - Unit 30


This was my second attempt at blending these images together. This was quite successful especially the last two images. The images of the astro turf show how it is multipurpose and could promote the hiring of the facilities. The software I used was Photoshop and I used the blend tool to be able to do this.

Unit 30 - Task 2

When using an image obtained from the website the best format to use would be JPEG as it allows for a wide range of colours to be kept. The downside of a JPEG would be that there is an issue with re-sizing the image, it can loose quality if it is changed too much. Another good thing with JPEG images is that they are available in a number file sizes, and this is good for if you are transferring it or storing it elsewhere as it can be small but it does sacrifice image quality. They are quick to load and transfer because they are not just one image, they are made up of lots of pixels.

For a brochure PDF files are better because they are accepted on most formats and so are compatable. They are kept as they are on the file and can be zoomed in or out on and can enlarge the image. The use of a PDF file is beneficial because it can be sent out by email and annotations, hyperlinks and bookmarks can be added once it is sent out.

For use on the vehicle a Vector image would be best as it doesn't distort when re-sized and remains good quality. The fact it is not made up of pixels makes it perfect for logo use and when it is cut out onto vinyl it would have a smooth and professional appearance compared to a bitmap image as it would have jagged edges.
